The Temple of the Sun at the Winter Solstice, 2002

In the early 1980s astronomers discovered that a window in the Temple of the Sun was aligned with the direction of the sunrise of the June (winter) solstice.

A patch of sunlight within the Temple is precisely bisected by a straight ledge sculpted into the bedrock.

In June 2002, Abby and Nile were at this site before sunrise in order to capture the event with a camera.

The Temple of the Sun was an important structure for the Inca. More about the solstice and features of the Temple follow.
