Joshua Tree National Park

The Oasis of Mara is on the northern border of the Park. It owes its existence to the Pinto Mountain earthquake fault. The land on one side of the fault is displaced so that precipitation falling in the Park highlands is absorbed by a natural dam created by the faultline.

The Native Americans found the oasis not only a dependable supply of water, but also a source of food (small game) and plants.
