VERNAL EQUINOX SUNRISE, 2003

The next morning I was up early to photograph the vernal equinox sunrise from the private terrace of our hotel room. Abby and I welcomed the arrival of spring from a vantage point probably used by people for 10,000 years or more.

We may have seen the same horizon markers used by ancient astronomers as they greeted this new season, important to their survival and to their religion.

(The Sun's precise time of crossing the equinox here was at 6:00 p.m. on March 20.)
