Near the beginning of the trail in the Tularosa Basin the view is dramatic in all directions. Sierra Blanca, a 12,000 foot high peak is in the distance to the right. I'm standing next to one of the first petroglyphs we observed.
Dating of these Jornada Mogollonimages is imprecise. Archaeologists surmise that they are probably about 1000 years old. A nearby village was occupied for over 400 years.
